Carkeek 12 Hour: Scarier than Halloween

October 28, 2010

What's scarier than ghosts, goblins and the walking dead this Halloween? The mind of Sam Thompson: father, husband, Northface-sponsored ultra-runner and race organizer of the Carkeek 12 Hour.

As Sam states on the race site "The 2010 race will be very scary." No kidding.

The loop in Carkeek Park, located in North Seattle, is 1.93 miles. Competitors will run or walk the course over and over with the goal of racking in as many as many miles as they can during the 12 hour race. And unlike many time-based events, this course isn't flat. Not even close.

Each loop on the stone and dirt trail includes two bridge crossings and 430ft of elevation gain/loss.

This monster of the race kicks off this Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 6am in Carkeek Park. Have a tip for a time-based event? Add a comment below.

I'll be toeing the start line Saturday and this is my first time-based endurance event, so Wish me luck!

1,000 Miles: Interview with an Everyday Superhero

August 18, 2010

Want to challenge yourself? Forget running or biking a wimpy 26.2 mile marathon. Instead try 1,000 miles.

That's exactly what a friend Joe Tegeder recently did. Amazing. Superhuman!

And yet, Joe is just a regular... well, Joe.

He was able to achieve this significant accomplishment in just over nine months.

To put the distance in context, 1,000 miles is equal to running from Seattle to Salt Lake City, with another six more marathons tacked on. Yeah, ... like REALLY far!

I recently got to sit down with Joe to learn about his journey into fitness and to gain some tips on how an everyday guy could accomplish a superhuman feat.
